Engine Ticking Noise
How to think about ticking sounds from the engine bay.
Quick answer
Ticking can be normal injector noise, low oil, valvetrain wear, exhaust leaks, or belt-driven accessory noise.
Most likely causes
- Low engine oil
- Normal injector tick
- Valve lifter noise
- Exhaust manifold leak
- Accessory pulley noise
Basic driver checks
- Check oil level.
- Notice cold versus warm behavior.
- Listen near top of engine versus belt area.
- Look for exhaust smell or soot.
DIY diagnostic path
- Do not add oil above full mark.
- Record a video for comparison.
- Stop driving if oil pressure light appears.
- Do not reach near belts while running.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring low oil
- Calling every tick a rod knock
- Using additives instead of diagnosis
