Car Trouble Safety Guide

Some car symptoms are inconvenient. Others can damage the engine or create a safety risk quickly.

Stop Driving Soon

  • Flashing check engine light, especially with shaking or loss of power.
  • Temperature gauge in the red or an overheating warning.
  • Oil pressure warning light or loud engine knocking.
  • Brake pedal sinking, severe grinding, or warning lights combined with poor braking.
  • Smoke, flames, fuel smell, or a strong electrical smell.

Do Not Touch Hot Or Moving Parts

  • Radiator cap, coolant hoses, or reservoir caps after overheating.
  • Brake rotors, calipers, or wheels immediately after driving.
  • Exhaust components, catalytic converters, and oxygen sensors.
  • Belts, pulleys, fans, and accessory drives near a running engine.

Tow Instead Of Driving

  • Severe misfire with a flashing warning light.
  • Active overheating or major coolant loss.
  • Major oil, brake fluid, or fuel leak.
  • Unsafe steering, braking, wheel wobble, or tire damage.
  • Any symptom that makes the car hard to control or unpredictable.
